Background of the Study

Aging is a natural process that comes with various health challenges, including chronic illnesses, mobility limitations, cognitive decline, and increased dependency on caregivers (WHO, 2024). As elderly individuals become more vulnerable, social support—comprising emotional, informational, and instrumental assistance—plays a crucial role in maintaining their well-being and improving healthcare outcomes (Adebayo & Musa, 2023). Studies indicate that elderly patients with strong social support networks experience lower stress levels, better adherence to treatment plans, and improved mental health (Olaleye et al., 2024).

Geriatric nursing care involves providing comprehensive healthcare services tailored to the unique needs of elderly patients. Nurses play a significant role in managing chronic conditions, preventing complications, and offering psychosocial support to enhance patients’ quality of life. However, the effectiveness of geriatric nursing care is often influenced by external factors such as family involvement, community support, and institutional policies (Oseni & Ibrahim, 2023).

In Taraba State, elderly individuals face various social and economic challenges that may affect their access to quality nursing care. Factors such as family breakdown, financial constraints, and the limited presence of elderly care facilities contribute to the burden on healthcare providers (Adamu et al., 2024). Despite the recognized importance of social support in geriatric care, there is limited empirical research on its impact on nursing outcomes in Taraba State. This study aims to examine how social support affects geriatric nursing care and to identify areas for policy improvement.

Statement of the Problem

The elderly population in Taraba State faces multiple healthcare challenges, including poor access to medical services, social isolation, and economic hardship. Social support is essential in addressing these challenges, as it helps elderly individuals cope with their medical conditions and maintain independence. However, many elderly individuals in the state lack adequate family and community support, which may lead to poor health outcomes (Bello et al., 2024).

Research suggests that a lack of social support contributes to increased hospital readmissions, prolonged recovery times, and poor adherence to prescribed treatments (Muhammed & Yusuf, 2024). Despite the importance of this issue, there is insufficient research on how social support influences the quality of geriatric nursing care in Taraba State. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the impact of social support on elderly patients’ healthcare experiences and identifying ways to enhance nursing interventions.

Objectives of the Study

1. To assess the impact of social support on the quality of geriatric nursing care in Taraba State.

2. To identify challenges associated with inadequate social support for elderly patients.

3. To recommend strategies for integrating social support into geriatric nursing care.

Research Questions

1. How does social support influence the quality of geriatric nursing care in Taraba State?

2. What challenges do elderly patients face due to inadequate social support?

3. What strategies can be implemented to improve social support in geriatric nursing care?

Research Hypotheses

1. Social support significantly improves the quality of geriatric nursing care in Taraba State.

2. Lack of social support negatively affects elderly patients' adherence to treatment and overall health outcomes.

3. Integrating social support strategies into nursing care will enhance geriatric healthcare services.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on elderly patients receiving geriatric nursing care in healthcare facilities in Taraba State. It examines the role of family, community, and institutional support in shaping nursing care outcomes. The study does not cover non-medical aspects of elderly well-being, such as financial assistance programs. A potential limitation is the reliance on self-reported data, which may introduce response bias.
